CHARLIE PARKER 100TH ANNIVERSARY

2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of the incomparable trailblazing jazz titan and influential composer, Charlie Parker. A global centennial celebration, entitled “Bird 100” was spearheaded by the Estate of Charlie Parker in collaboration with the Estate’s management company, Jampol Artist Management. The celebration was planned to include a host of major initiatives including new music releases, a tribute tour, festival and events, prestigious exhibitions, special partnerships, a unique graphic novel, exclusive collectible art, specially curated radio broadcast and digital programs and a myriad of independent appreciations and events. Elizabeth Healy was invited to help the Estate create and produce new initiatives for the centennial celebration.

Despite the impact of the global pandemic in 2020, a number of the initiatives planned were brought to fruition. Among those completed that were created, produced and/or aided by Healy Entertainment were:

BIRD AND BEYOND: CELEBRATING CHARLIE PARKER AT 100
A Jazz Congress 2020 Session

 

A special panel presentation was created for the 2020 Jazz Congress conference in New York City.  Held at Jazz @ Lincoln Center, the panel included artists from diverse genres to examine Parker’s influence on pop, hip hop, rap, rock and jazz, and to describe how his musical legacy continues to resonate.  Moderated by Ken Druker, Vice President, Jazz Development at Verve Label Group, the artists on the panel were Will Calhoun, Terri Lyne Carrington, Kokayi, Rudresh Mahanthappa and Charles McPherson.

A JAM SESSION FOR TROUBLING TIMES
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater
World Premiere: 2020

 

A new dance work to honor and celebrate Bird’s 100th was created by choreographer, Jamar Roberts for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The work featured music by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and was premiered during Ailey’s first-ever Virtual Winter Season in December 2020.

GRAMMY Museum®–Streamed Presentation–COLLECTION: Live

 

The GRAMMY Museum® presented a special live streamed conversation about Charlie Parker’s time and musical impact in California. Featured guests were: Dave Chisholm, Chuck Haddix, Bobby Watson and Christian McBride.

ARTIST TESTIMONIALS

A number of significant artists were invited to record video of themselves speaking about the artistry and impact of Charlie Parker, both on themselves as well as the world. The short testimonials were posted via social media during the centennial celebration. Among the artists who contributed recorded video statements were: Jon Batiste, Terri Lyne Carrington, Herbie Hancock, Sheila Jordan, Wynton Marsalis, John Mayer and Christian McBride.
